‘Puttin’ on the Fritz’ Party Slated to Celebrate Tredyffrin Lumber Yard’s 153-year history

Berwyn’s Fritz Lumber, the family owned lumber business that has served the Main Line community for 153 years, is holding the final auction of its remaining lumber and hardware on Saturday, before closing its doors for good, writes Michaelle Bond for Philly.com.

fritz-lumberThe store held out for over a century and a half after being founded during the Civil War, but has finally buckled under the onslaught of chain stores and the lack of interest from new generations of family members.

“We’re sad,” commented William H. Fritz III, Fritz Lumber’s owner. “It’s been 153 years, and we’d like it to continue, but times have changed.”

The Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust is hoping to take advantage of the nostalgia from the closure of Fritz Lumber by organizing a fundraising party together with Eadeh Enterprises which bought the property for $2 million, two weeks after the final auction.

The party will commemorate the family’s contributions to the community and raise funds to preserve a piece of local history, the 18th-century Jones Log Barn.

The auction is on October 8 from 8:30 a.m. and the Puttin’ on the Fritz’ party will start at 7 p.m. on October 22 with live and silent auctions, food, drinks, and live music. Tickets for the party are available from Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust’s website.
