The Greater Valley Forge Transportation Management Association recognized Chester County last week with its highest distinction for sustainability, the Diamond Level award.

During its annual sustainability breakfast the GVFTMA, which is the region’s leading advocate for sustainable transportation, praised Chester County along with a number of public and private sector organizations.

The GVFTMA highlighted the combination of initiatives developed by the Chester County Planning Commission when presenting the award. Among them were the publication of the Ride Guide, which offers transit information to citizens and employees of Chester County in two languages, the addition of bicycle racks at County facilities and the promotion of the National Bike Challenge.

It also recognized the addition of the Public Transportation Plan into Landscapes2, the finalization of the Baltimore Pike Complete Streets Plan, as well as the expansion of the Chester Valley Trail.

“Chester County’s Comprehensive Plan, Landscapes2, guides us in growth management and preservation strategies, and the issue of transportation is a key focus of the Plan,” commented Brian O’Leary, executive director of the Chester County Planning Commission.

He added that Landscapes2 has helped guide the Planning Commission when creating projects, programs, and services.  These help grow public transportation alternatives and facilitate cycling and walking as alternative methods of getting around.
