Better Neighbors? Chester County More Likely To Have Bystanders Help With CPR

By

Bystanders who come across emergency situations where someone is experiencing cardiac arrest are more likely to perform CPR in wealthy counties like Chester County, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

About half of bystanders in higher-income locations performed CPR, with a 23.3 percent rate of success, compared to just one in 14 bystanders who performed CPR in lower-income places, with a mere 1.5 percent success rate, according to the article summarizing the study’s findings.

“These findings tell us that in order to get more bystanders to step up and provide lifesaving CPR for someone in need, we need to target CPR education efforts in counties with lower median household incomes,” Penn Center for Resusitation Science Senior Research Coordinator Kam Ching (Nina) Li said in the article.
