Philadelphia Media Network Appoints Main Line’s Josh Kopelman as Chair, Gerry Lenfest to Step Aside
The creator of Half.com, one of the most popular websites for books, movies, and music, has been named Board Chairman of Philadelphia Media Network, writes Jeff Gammage for Philly.com.
Josh Kopelman, who is also co-founder of one of the nation’s most active venture capital firms, takes the reins of the company operating Inquirer, Daily News, and Philly.com as it attempts to find new ways of storytelling and other income streams.
Kopelman succeeds H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest, the former sole owner of PMN and one of the biggest philanthropists in the country. Lenfest, who donated close to 500 acres to create the ChesLen Preserve in Chester County, will continue to serve on PMN’s board. Lisa Kabnick, a senior adviser for Reed Smith L.L.P. and current PMN board member, will take over as vice chair.
The change in the chairmanship is the latest step in the innovative restructuring of PMN. The process was started last year after Lenfest donated both the newspapers and website to the Institute for Journalism in New Media where he chairs the board of managers. The institute can accept outside donations and then target that money to find innovative ways to secure the long-term future of quality journalism.
Regarding his successor, Lenfest said that Kopelman is “young, he’s smart, and he’s dedicated to PMN and its future. Journalism is important, but how it’s going to survive in the digital age takes people like Josh Kopelman to help us figure it out.”
