Pennhurst State School and Hospital has been awarded $10 million out of the $13.2 million needed to install new infrastructure.

Two projects in Chester County have been awarded a total of $20 million in state funding that will allow them to move forward after being in the planning phase for years, writes Natalie Kostelni for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The first project is the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital which has been awarded $10 million out of the $13.2 million needed to install new infrastructure. The funds will also cover the required environmental remediation and engineering work.

“This is going to change the narrative of the former state hospital,” said MaryFrances McGarrity of the Chester County Economic Development Council, which oversees the distribution of funds.

Another $10 million has been awarded to a partnership that plans to redevelop the former Foote Mineral site in East Whiteland. The 79-acre property, owned by Rosskamp Management, will be used for a $16.7 million project to clean up the site and develop housing for seniors and a solar farm on the land.

Both projects are part of the Pennsylvania’s Business in Our Sites program that helps make sites ready for new uses.
