The Chester County Food Bank received an amazing gift this morning when a group of employees from  Wegmans Food Markets’  Downingtown and Malvern stores presented the Food Bank with a check for $120,367 and a truckload of nearly 18,000 pounds of non-perishable food.

In addition to the gifts of food and money, employees of Wegmans, the 88-store supermarket chain with stores throughout the country, also donated their time to help unload and organize 20 pallets of food, including canned soups, vegetables and fruit, peanut butter, canned tuna, cereal and juice. Board members, the leadership and staff of Chester County Food Bank were also on hand to welcome the presentation of the check and the food delivery.

The funds are a result of the Wegmans’ Check Out Hunger campaign which ran for two months from late October through late December. As part of the campaign, both customers and employees contributed between $1 and $5 or more at the checkout.

“We are ever so grateful for the partnership that we have with Wegmans,” said Larry Welsch, Executive Director of the Chester County Food Bank. “I am truly amazed at the collaboration between Wegmans and their customers. The success of Check Out Hunger and donation of food strengthens each year, thereby allowing the Food Bank to serve more of our neighbors in need.”

The campaign did better this year than ever before. Regionally, the Wegmans teams raised $41,730 more than last year, with the Downingtown and Malvern stores showing an increase in donations of over $28,000.

“One of our values is making a difference in every community we serve, and we’re thankful for our customers and employees who so generously share that commitment,” said Wegmans Pennsylvania Division Manager, Blaine Forkell. “As we celebrate the milestone of 100 years as a family-owned company, we’re especially proud of the partnerships we build to support local food banks in feeding the hungry.”
