Yard Sale Raises $4,350 to Help Kennett Square Homeless Shelter

Kennett Square citizens showed their generosity once again as hundreds showed up to a community yard sale to benefit a local homeless shelter. The sale raised more than $4,350 on Saturday, some of it donations from people who just wanted to help, with many local businesses also pitching in.

The HIS Mission, the homeless shelter on Birch Street in Kennett Square, had announced earlier this year they were having financial troubles. While they currently house nine homeless people, that number can get much higher, especially in the winter months.

“People were coming up to us and saying that they saw it in the newspaper and said they would like to give a donation,” said Kathy Anderson, co-organizer of the yard sale along with Cheryl Hall Ruoss, ”it was a community effort and we had some wonderful volunteers.”

Anderson and Ruoss said they may plan another benefit yard sale in the future for the homeless shelter. There is a shed on the premises that needs to be repaired, along with other work to the main house.
