Tina L. O’Connor: Reflecting On Yearly Goals

The month of June, which just ended a couple of days ago, contains so many exciting events: the end of the school year, the summer solstice, Father’s Day and Flag Day.

June, being halfway through the year, offers a unique opportunity to evaluate how much progress was made accomplishing the goals we set in January. Whatever your goal it is easier to make adjustments half way through the year; than to wait until October or November. It is human nature to blame the holidays during those months for not staying on track.

Several years ago, West Chester University Graduate Studies program provided me with an assistantship for a year. What a blessing! The gentleman who facilitated the program suggested recording any accomplishments on an index card that could then easily transfer to a resume.

I continue to practice this advice. Not only does it save time; but it builds self-esteem. Life is busy. And it passes quickly. If you remember the definition of mindfulness; this activity allows us to slow down and focus on our accomplishments.

Especially on those “lackluster” days. Record these goals in a journal, planner or cell phone and kept in a prominent location.

Here are some thoughts for reflection:

  1. Be kind and gentle with yourself as you evaluate your progress.
  2. Make sure your goals are realistic.
  3. Prioritize your remaining goals.
  4. Close your eyes and let your fingers do the “talking.” Work on the goal you just chose.
  5. Ask for help from a support person.
  6. Keep your thoughts positive to motivate you through the remainder of the year.
  7. Find a kind soul that will keep you accountable.
  8. Share your goal with your manager/supervisor and ask for feedback.
  9. Break your goal down into smaller, manageable parts.
  10. You can do this!!!

Goals keep us focused and motivated. They also help us feel productive.

Take a few minutes today to reflect on your goal in the morning and feel proud of what you have accomplished this evening.
