Kennett Square-based Bernardon Haber Holloway Architects received national recognition for its recreation of Station No. 46, which featured a red-roofed tower and prominent antique room showcasing the highlights of past equipment alongside a modern linear array of engine bays. Bernardon Haber Holloway was bestowed a Firehouse Magazine Station Design Awards notable mention in the volunteer and combination category.
For more than 106 years, the brave men and women of the Minquas Fire Co. No. 2 have rushed to the rescue of the Downingtown area community, and the design for its 2013-rebuilt Station No. 46 harkens to both an environmental safety rescue effort and that honorable legacy to Chester County.
In order to build the station, however, Minquas resolved a HAZMAT issue at the site of a former city dump and rescued the land from its toxic past through a costly cleanup.
The resulting $2.8 million, 23,000-square-foot fire station is a testament to the Minquas Fire Co. heritage and its commitment to the community.
