A new rule handed down from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board could open the tap of options for beer drinkers looking to try new flavors by grabbing 12-packs from their favorite distributor.
The PLCB legal advisory issued this month allows distributors to compete with grocery stores, bars and convenience stores by offering containers with as little as 128 fluid ounces total, which is about half of the 264-ounce previous minimum, according to a Post-Gazette report.
“By allowing these 12-packs to be sold at beer distributors, customers get another choice in their beer selections,” state Rep. Paul Costa, D-Wilkins, said in the article. “It provides family-owned distributors more options in their product line [and supports] our breweries in Pennsylvania, so it’s a win-win situation.”
The advisory represents the biggest change in six or seven decades for beer distributors, the article noted, and it will take suppliers several weeks to develop the packaging and distribute new inventory.
