Esteem For Engineers On Par With Teachers, TE Connectivity Survey Says

By

Just as many people think engineers are driving positive innovation in society as think teachers are; that perception is up 6 percent, to 79 percent of American adults, in just a year, according to the second annual Engineering Sentiment Survey conducted by the Berwyn operations hub for TE Connectivity.

“There are exciting innovations going on in just about every field and in places we wouldn’t have imagined even three years ago. Engineers continue to drive innovation, bringing advancements across industries that impact our daily lives,” Executive Vice President and CTO Rob Shaddock said in a Virtual-Strategy Magazine article. “There is greater appreciation for the role of engineers in society, but there is a growing need to inspire more students to be engineers in the U.S. and around the world.”

That’s because merely 16 percent of graduating high schoolers are proficient in math and interested in a science, technology, engineering or math career.

The 1,010 survey respondents predicted that during the next decade of innovation, connected or smart devices will have the greatest societal impact, followed by robot development, 3D printing, wearable technologies, drones and driverless vehicles.
