Plan Your Commute: Route 23 In Schuylkill Township To Close For Bridge Rehabilitation

By

Route 23 (Valley Forge Road) will be closed between MacAvoy Lane and Dorchester Way in Schuylkill Township for bridge rehabilitation in the following weeks.

Crews will rehabilitate the three-span bridge by removing the deck and steel beams, building a new concrete deck, and installing new concrete beams.

In addition, crews will replace the pier caps on which the beams sit.  The existing bridge which was built in 1967, has two 12 foot travel lanes, and two 4 foot shoulders.  It is 32 feet wide. The new bridge will have two 12 foot travel lanes and two 5 foot shoulders.  The new bridge will be 34 feet wide.

1.31.2015 RT 23 Bridge DetourAs of Monday February 2nd, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has not officially announced the start date for construction.

During the rehabilitation, motorist using the Route 23 bridge will be detoured over Country Club Road, Valley Park Road, and South Whitehorse Road (highlighted in yellow in image).

The bridge rehabilitation project, funded by state ACT 89 monies, is one of the three structurally deficient bridge project in Chester County.  The other two bridges are on Fern Hill Road over U.S. 202 in West Goshen Township, which was completed at the end of 2014, and U.S. 322/ Horse Shoe Pike over Brandywine Creek in Honey Brook Township.
