Pennsylvania Shows Urban Outfitters Its Green Hand(out)

By

The editors at Philadelphia magazine aren’t sure whether recent news of a $3 million grant from state government should be heralded as an environmentally friendly investment or corporate welfare, but either way our neighbors to the west will get a 3 megawatt rooftop solar array on top of the new Urban Outfitter’s new Gap, Lancaster County 1.2 million sq. ft. fulfillment center.

While questioning the need to help parent company Urban Outfitters, Inc. — a behemoth corporation that does $3 billion in annual sales — the magazine also posed the question, “Would they go the environmentally friendly route without a hand from government?”

The solar array is expected to power about half of the center’s energy needs.
