Three Chester County Students Beat Odds, Land National Merit Scholarships

Three Chester County students joined an elite group of 6,700 National Merit Scholars recognized across the country this year.

Three West Chester students have accomplished what roughly 1.3 million of their peers could not: earning a prestigious National Merit Scholarship, writes Justin Heinze for the Patch.

Collin Z. Hu and Anshul Kollar of Unionville High School, and Alexander V. Isaac of West Chester East High School, each received a $2,500 scholarship.

The road to becoming a National Merit Scholar is a competitive one. It starts with the PSAT/NMSQT in a student’s junior year, progressing to academic records, and essay, and more standardized test scores.

Of the 1.3 million students who enter annually, only 16,000 reach semifinalist status, with 6,700 students nationwide going on to earn the Scholar title.

These three have cleared every hurdle. Now, they’re setting their sights on college and careers in the fields of history, financial planning, and computer science

These achievements reflect their own drive and the strong academic culture found in Chester County schools.
