A Harleysville resident stepped onto the national stage this week when Terry Smith appeared on Wheel of Fortune, bringing a bit of Montgomery County with him.
Smith is known among friends, family, and coworkers for his baking. Each holiday season, he makes about 120 dozen cookies at home and gives them away. That adds up to nearly 1,500 cookies each year. He rotates through seven varieties, with butterscotch oatmeal as his favorite.
That same steady approach showed up early in the game. Smith solved toss-up puzzles and worked his way through rounds with consistent play, building momentum as a first-time contestant.
Then came the moment that caught national attention.
During the final puzzle, Smith chose to solve instead of calling another letter, even after host Ryan Seacrest encouraged him to take the extra step. He stuck with his instinct, solved the puzzle correctly, and earned $5,100, finishing the game with $12,200 and a trip to the Bonus Round.
But the decision came at a cost. Viewers quickly pointed out that calling another letter first could have added more money, turning a correct answer into a missed opportunity that sparked strong reactions online.
Away from the show, Smith is focused on recovery. He recently underwent a left hip replacement and is working to stay active, with one goal in mind, keeping up with his grandson, Clint.
For Harleysville, it is a familiar kind of story. A local routine built on consistency and generosity, carried onto a national stage, with one split-second decision that people are still talking about.
