Where Language Meets Community: Inside Susan Vandenberg’s ESL Classroom at Chester County OIC

At Chester County OIC, Susan Vandenberg blends ESL instruction with community connection — helping adult learners grow, succeed, and feel at home through education and support.

When a young Pastor from Sri Lanka asked Susan Vandenberg for help learning English, she became a willing tutor.

For Vandenberg, the positive experience blossomed into managing a vibrant church-based program serving 30 students. This, in turn, led to her valuable contributions as a paid teacher at the Chester County OIC, where she now teaches two Level 3 courses (online and virtual), a Level 5 Course, and a bi-weekly Conversation Class offered through the Exton branch of the Chester County Library. Vandenberg continues her service as a church and community volunteer, giving more than 15 hours a week of volunteer time.

When asked what she likes most about teaching and tutoring, she said, “Where do I begin? I truly love it all. The students are highly motivated, eager to learn, and incredibly appreciative. It’s a joy to get to know them, their families, and their cultures. One of the most rewarding experiences is watching them grow and succeed — especially when they become U.S. citizens. That is always an amazing moment.”

Vandenberg stays in touch with many of her students and was thrilled to learn that one of her students, Lilia, achieved her dream of partnering with another woman to start an embroidery business called Embroydica.

“One-on-one tutoring builds strong relationships,” Vandenberg stated. “It allows teachers and tutors to meet each student’s immediate and personal needs as they adjust to life in a new culture. It creates a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns that they might be hesitant to bring up in a classroom setting.”

Every tutor-student relationship is unique, but Vandenberg says she’s been able to provide in-depth assistance with the job interview process in the United States and share information on topics like the educational system and starting a business.

“The greatest reward is seeing the students’ motivation and joy,” she said. “It is also wonderful to watch them build relationships with teachers and other students.”

Connections outside the classroom extend these experiences, with Vanderberg noting that one of the teachers hosts a monthly chili night in addition to holiday gatherings, inviting students into their homes.

“Many of our students have never experienced American hospitality in this way, and these moments are especially meaningful,” she explained.
