In Chester County, Home of the Sparrow is helping families stay housed when life takes an unexpected turn.

For one local mother, stability can be more fragile than it seems — especially when challenges pile up all at once.
A year ago, Maria was managing life on a tight but workable budget, balancing a full schedule as a home health aide with additional side jobs to support her daughter. Like many working families, she lived paycheck to paycheck, but she was making it work.
That changed quickly when her daughter fell ill just before the holidays, forcing Maria to miss work and lose income. At the same time, rising winter heating costs and an unexpected car repair stretched her finances beyond their limits. With rent due and no cushion left, she found herself on the brink of eviction.
That’s when Home of the Sparrow stepped in, covering the remaining rent and enrolling Maria in its Supportive Housing Program.
Now, Maria is working with case managers to build a sustainable budget, plan for seasonal expenses, and establish an emergency fund — tools aimed at long-term stability.
Donations help fund essentials like utility bills, rental assistance, child care, and housing costs for families in crisis.
