Last week, the Bucks County Commissioners celebrated the grand opening of the new Diversion, Assessment, Restoration, and Treatment (DART) Center in Doylestown, writes Jeff Werner for Patch.
The single-story facility was constructed at the former Bucks County Women’s Community Corrections Center.
It will serve adults suffering from mental illness in the criminal justice system to promote recovery through community support and treatment and reduce recidivism.
Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia dedicated her efforts to creating the facility.
The center spans 23,000 square feet and can house 28 adults across its short-term observation unit, residential treatment facility, and the restoration-to-competency unit.
“Today marks an important milestone for Bucks County because we are not simply opening a building, we’re opening a pathway to a more compassionate, effective approach to mental health and criminal justice,” said the county’s director of general services, Bernard Griggs Jr.
The GEO Group was hired by the county to manage daily operations, while the county’s behavioral health and development department will oversee the facility.
Individuals will be provided with psychiatric assessment, counseling, medication management, peer support, case management, and nursing during their stay, which can last between one day and two weeks as needed.
