Ranked as the third most walkable city in Pennsylvania, West Chester offers charming, accessible streets with easy access to daily errands.

Downtown West Chester is one of Pennsylvania’s most walkable “cities,” according to both residents and research, writes Jeff Martinez for Islands.

Positive feedback and a high Walk Score affirm West Chester as an accessible, charming town perfect tourists and long-term residents.

A Walk Score, a project by real estate agency Redfin, evaluates how easily a resident can accomplish daily errands on foot and provides cites nationwide with a numerical score.

A score of 90-100 indicates residents can access daily needs like work, school, and grocery shopping without a car. A descending scale indicates less walkability and an increased need for car travel.

West Chester’s high score of 74 makes it the third most walkable city in the state behind Lancaster and Philadelphia.

Research from Stanford University reveals that residents of highly walkable cities take more steps per day, even without intentional exercise. This regular movement leads to positive long-term health outcomes, including decreased risk of diabetes and heart disease, in addition to mental health benefits like decreased stress and depression.

Stretching roughly twenty square blocks, the borough boasts a diverse range of local businesses and restaurants along charming brick sidewalks. Public parks, nature preserves, and community areas make the borough a beloved space for community spirit and a close-knit feel.

Historic architecture also serves as a popular tourist attraction. For newcomers planning a first-time visit, the Chester County History Center offers a welcoming look at the borough’s long history and top spots.
