Joe Walsh, a retired West Chester Henderson High School health and physical education teacher and member of four athletic Halls of Fame, died on Jan. 27 at 75, writes Gary Miles for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
A West Chester resident, Walsh grew up in Levittown, played football at Woodrow Wilson High School before continuing at the now West Chester University.
He started teaching at Henderson in 1972 before spending the next five decades coaching student-athletes, teaching high school students, and mentoring countless colleagues and friends.
“He cared for the kids,” said his wife, Pam Walsh. “He taught them as individuals and played to their strengths.”
Walsh coached football, wrestling, lacrosse, and tennis, guiding teams to four league championships. He was four-time Chester County area football coach of the year, coached in 13 all-star games, and later was an assistant coach at West Chester University.
He was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Ches-Mont League Hall of Fame four years later. His latest recognition came in 2025, when he was inducted into the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame.
