Over in Warrington, Chris Carr, founder of Bucks County Drum Company, has been handcrafting drums for over two decades, reports Christie Ileto for 6abc.
Carr, who initially made a living making cabinets, transitioned to drum building, opening his business in 2005.
He taught himself everything there was to know about making drums, from cutting veneers to later making his own shells.
“I would buy shells by the parts, put my own finish on making a drum. That’s how I learned, taught myself how to do it,” Carr said.
His work is methodical and extremely precise, and while he has had several helpers come and go over the years, he now does the majority of the work himself.
Several well-known musicians, like jazz drummer Bernard Purdie and David Uosikkinen from The Hooters, have used his drum sets.
“It’s important for people to understand that Pa. is huge in historical culture, especially workmanship and craftsman, that’s why I named the company what I did. I grew up in Bucks County… Doylestown,” he said. “There’s a lot of history here, and craftsman, and I’m proud to be part of it.”
