Chester County Man with Autism Lives Out His Childhood Dream of Becoming Drummer

By

Jake Herring, who has autism, has managed to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a drummer, with the help of his lifelong coach, Anthony Cracchiolo, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“I have autism and it’s hard for me to do stuff,” said Herring. “But it’s easy for me to drum.”

Cracchiolo has been jamming with Herring for over two decades.

“Jake is more like a brother to me than anything anymore,” he said. “We’ve known each other for so long. Jake was nine years old when I met him.”

The drumming helps Herring better manage his fine motor skills. He also got the courage to perform for crowds at private parties and even community events.

“Never underestimate anybody’s ability if they work hard,” said Cracchiolo.

Today, Herring is the drummer of The Herring Brothers. He co-runs the family band along with his brother, Bradley

“We practice together, we play together, we travel to the gig together,” said his brother. “He really does make me proud, especially when I least expect it.”

In the future, the brothers plan to start playing for audiences beyond their Chester County community.
