An annual art show at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital is highlighting the incredible talents of artists with physical and cognitive disabilities, writes Stephanie Stahl for CBS News.
Art Ability, the Malvern hospital’s workshop and annual show, showcases stunning artwork by disabled artists. Artists can display and sell their artwork, with the pieces lining the hospital walls to inspire rehab residents.
This year’s exhibit includes 400 pieces by 170 artists from all over the world. Artwork was completed by artists with traumatic brain injuries, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), vision loss, strokes, and other disabilities.
Exhibit pieces range from paintings to jewelry to sculpture.
Fluid artist Rachel Coleman from Shy Fox Studio leads the workshop. She serves as the featured artist for this year’s showcase, which is Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s 30th annual exhibition.
Coleman, who experiences vision loss due to retinitis pigmentosa, shared that she turned to artwork to heal after a family tragedy.
About the exhibit and its impact, Coleman said, “It’s an amazing show because it showcases disabilities, and we have all types of disabilities.”
This year’s Art Ability showcase will run through Feb. 1. Artists receive 80 percent of proceeds from sold pieces, with the remaining 20 percent going towards Bryn Mawr’s lifesaving treatment programs.
