When it came time for Partners in Outreach to choose chairs for this year’s Laughs for Literacy fundraiser, the decision was clear. Longtime supporters and familiar faces at Partners in Outreach events, Sue and Frank Mattei, didn’t hesitate when asked to take the lead.

“It was an easy yes for us,” they shared. “We’ve been attending Laughs for Literacy since the beginning and just got more
involved over the years.”

That deep connection to the mission shone brightly on event night. The evening was filled with joy and generosity, but one moment stood out above the rest: the call to mission.

“It is so gratifying to see how supportive the crowd is of Partners in Outreach’s mission in serving children and families in our community! When KPMG, Rafferty Subaru, and CTDI all stood up to match the donations of the audience, we were blown away!” Sue and Frank recalled.

The impact of that generosity is tangible. In 2025 alone, Partners in Outreach reached over 200 students through the REAL and Classroom Reading programs and distributed more than 4,000 books. “Literacy is the goal, but children gain self-confidence and a better foundation for a brighter future!” the Matteis emphasized.

As passionate ambassadors for the organization, the couple encourages others to get involved:

“If you’re thinking about volunteering, just do it!” they said. “PIO’s programs continue to be fueled by the boundless energy and dedication of more than 700 volunteers. … So join us! We’d love to have you!”

To potential sponsors, the message is just as enthusiastic: “When you support Laughs for Literacy, 100 percent of your donation goes directly to PIO’s programs.”

As they reflect on this year’s success, Sue and Frank remarked, “We are humbled by the generosity and support of all the attendees at Laughs for Literacy! The evening could not have been possible without the compassionate vision of Maryanne Parsons over 15 years ago! Also, we want to thank the entire Laughs for Literacy committee for all of their hard work, attention to detail, and dedication to make the event a success! Thank you!”

Their leadership — and laughter — helped make 2025’s event one to remember.
