The Steeple View redevelopment in Newtown is entering a new phase with a new owner, fresh vision, and a new name: Liberty Centre, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch.
Jim Worthington, a Newtown businessman, presented sketch plans with a team of professionals for a 125-unit residential development on eight acres in the center of the borough.
The property extends south from Centre Avenue to behind the Wine & Spirits store and incorporates the former beer store, which will be demolished. Much of the site was once part of the Stockburger Chevrolet dealership.
Earlier this year, Worthington purchased the property from developer Allan Smith, who had secured required approvals for the second phase of the Steeple View redevelopment project with apartments, retail and restaurant uses.
Worthington revised those plans, removing retail and restaurant uses, to help reduce any local traffic impact.
“We heard it time and time again—too much traffic,” he said. “We addressed that.”
He plans to keep a walkway along Newtown Creek and a public plaza, and triple its size.
“The outside spaces are the ones I am most interested in,” said Worthington. “To me, this could become the center of the town. The town square I’m proposing would enhance the town to the next level.”
