At this year’s West Chester Chili Cook-Off, the Barclay Friends culinary team didn’t just show up. They made a statement.
Serving more than 1,300 people in just the first ninety minutes, their tent bustled with conversation, smiles, and the warm, savory aroma of all-beef chili garnished with micro cilantro and a bright lime crema. It was a dish that not only won first place in the non-profit category but also represented the heart of their culinary philosophy.
“We’re proud of how far the culinary department has come in the past year,” said Brianna Morales, Director of Culinary Services. “The chili cook-off was an opportunity to share that with the community.”
Head Chef Evan Neal agreed, noting that his years of experience gave him the foundation to craft something memorable. “I’ve made thousands of gallons of chili throughout my career,” he explained. “For Barclay Friends, I make sure it has lots of vegetables, isn’t too spicy, and has a nice garnish.”

The goal wasn’t just to win; it was to offer a taste of what residents enjoy every day. Barclay Friends has long believed that nourishment and community are closely linked, and food plays a powerful role in making people feel at home.
“Anytime we do an event like this, Chef Evan is always intentional about serving something residents would get living in the community,” stated Senior Director of Sales and Marketing, Paige Meacham. “It really reflects our commitment to quality and comfort.”
That commitment resonated beyond the judges. Meacham shared how many visitors came to the tent not only for a sample but to share memories. Some recalled how a parent, spouse, or friend had once been a resident at Barclay Friends and received exceptional care. Those conversations, heartfelt and unexpected amid the lively crowd, meant as much as the award itself.
The chili also fits into a broader menu that balances classic favorites with seasonal creativity. Residents enjoy dishes like braised short ribs, chicken cordon bleu, crab cakes, and Italian-night staples like lasagna and chicken parmesan. And when autumn arrives, hearty soups and comforting bowls of chili feel especially right. “Chili is familiar,” Morales shared. “It’s nourishing, balanced, and brings people together.”
With the holiday season approaching, the culinary team is already looking ahead to festive meals featuring turkey, ham, and even filet. Morales will also be showcasing her dessert talents for celebrations and gatherings throughout the community.
Winning the chili cook-off wasn’t just a culinary accomplishment. It was a moment of connection between neighbors, families, past residents, and the staff who care for those who call Barclay Friends home.
