A Crozer-Chester Medical Center sit-in protest on Monday morning led to the arrest of eight people, writes Sarah Gantz for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
A rally was staged at the Upland Center by Put People First PA!, an organization advocating for Medicaid and hospital access. The group was protesting the closure of Crozer Health, hoping to raise awareness about the lack of hospital services locally.
Crozer-Chester Medical Center had a level II trauma center and a 24/7 mental health crisis center and was the busiest hospital in Delaware County before it was closed this past spring by Prospect Medical Holdings under bankruptcy proceedings.
The sit-in took place in a professional office building at the medical center that has remained open for specific appointments.
Upland Police ordered eight people out of the building and arrested them on charges of defiant trespassing when they refused to leave.
The group is lobbying for county and state lawmakers to take control of the hospital through eminent domain.
The National Union of the Homeless and the Crozer-Chester Nurses Association also joined the protest, which was part of a “national day of action for Medicaid.”
