1723 Vineyards in Landenberg is one of the few Pennsylvania wineries that maintain their own vineyard and produce wines exclusively from their grapes, writes for the Penn Live Patriot-News.
Sarah and Ben Cody, fifth-generation farmers from the Midwest, purchased the historic McMaster farm in Chester County in 2014. The property had previously been enrolled in the Chester County Agricultural Land Preservation program to protect it from high-density development.
The vineyard was originally part of New London Township, which later split to form what is now Franklin Township. This name reflects the year New London Township was chartered.
Another historic note of the farm is that part was once owned by Benjamin Franklin while he served as ambassador to France.
The Codys planted the vineyard in 2015, including popular varieties such as Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chambourcin, Albariño, and Riesling, as well as lesser-known grapes like Petite Arvine and Chardonel.
Their still and sparkling wines range in price from $28 to $45. The binary also sells gift baskets, wine bundles, and more. Guests can sit inside or outside, enjoying a yard with beautiful views of the vineyard.
