While many wine lovers across the country don’t take Pennsylvania wine seriously, the state has made great strides in the industry as its number of licensed wineries has grown from 64 to 257 since 2000, writes Marnie Old for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The depth of grape-growing experience has expanded, and therefore, so has the quality of the wines produced here.

“Compared to other international wine regions, the various facets of our climate most closely resemble those found in northern France, northern Italy, Austria, and even Germany,” said Michela Centinari, assistant professor of viticulture at Penn State.

The cool, cloudy, but still humid conditions favor light and bright white wines like the 2016 Grüner Veltliner from Penns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford.

Pennsylvania does produce some noteworthy red wines, too, like the 2016 Cabernet Franc from 1723 Vineyards in Landenberg.
