Sarah and Ben Cody, owners of 1723 Vineyards in Landenberg, are looking forward to a busy and exciting year for their winery, writes Paul Vigna for the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

The fifth-generation farmers from the Midwest bought 36 acres of the historic McMaster farm — a part of which was once owned by Benjamin Franklin — in 2014. A year later, they planted their first arbor.

Today, they have several premium wine grapes planted, including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Albarino.

Over the years, they have also gathered a loyal following that helped them weather the pandemic better than most.

“Our core customer base, and in particular, our wine club, has been very loyal and supportive,” said Ben.

Meanwhile, the nice weather has helped the vineyard stay in great shape. The pair is currently farming eight acres, which is their ideal size.

“Winegrowing is a labor of love,” said Ben. “Lord knows you don’t do it for the money!”

Now, the couple has big plans for the future, including the first round of brandy made from their Chambourcin. They are also expanding their sparkling program as demand continues to grow.
