After retiring from football, Dick Vermeil, now a resident of East Fallowfield, has been busy producing award-winning wines at his own winery, Vermeil Wines, reports Ken Ruinard for Go Upstate.
The winery’s tasting room in Napa has already been recognized as the very best in the area, voted number one in Napa for two years running, a distinction that underscores its consistent quality and popularity among visitors.
“Last year it was voted the number one tasting room in Napa County, not connected to the winery itself,” said Vermeil. “We’re proud of it and we do it the best way we can possibly do it.”
However, he added that, despite its top ranking, the tasting room itself operates at a loss every single day. The real revenue comes from visitors who decide to join the winery’s wine club while they are enjoying their visit.
“But that doesn’t depress me,” he said. “I never went into the wine business to make money. I went into the business to make wine. And I’m proud of what we do.”
