March was an unforgettable month for the Bayard Rustin High School Band, writes staff for The Daily Local News

The band traveled to Chicago, Illinois to perform in the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival, which is a prestigious event. Rustin High School was one out of five bands selected nationwide, adding another layer of honor. Chester County’s own students performed at Chicago Symphony Hall

A private clinic was also held for the students, led by the director of band at the University of Michigan, retired Colonel Jason Fettig. The students were given the opportunity to learn from Fettig, gaining knowledge from his expert advice.

“This experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students,” said Michael Shoremount, Rustin’s band director. “The students worked incredibly hard for several months inside and out of school to have an exceptional performance.”

Throughout their trip, Rustin High School band members were also able to experience Chicago, where they explored the lively city and relished the abundance of history. The school trip was transformative for Rustin students, as they were able to grow in their musical talents, explore a new place, and work and learn together as classmates.
