Unionville High School’s Academic Team has successfully won the Chester County Academic Competition varsity match, writes staff for The Times of Chester County.
Unionville’s team defeated over twenty-three other schools in the competition, a yearly event organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU).
UHS’s Varsity Academic Team will now advance to the statewide Pennsylvania State Academic Competition, set to take place in Harrisburg on May 2.
The victory was not easily won. After initially losing by thirty points to the Downingtown STEM Academy and West Chester East High School, UHS made a dramatic comeback and was able to win by five points in a tie-breaking final round.
UHS student Katherine Connolly, who secured the team’s victory by correctly answering the final question, shared, “We were down by quite a few points, but I was trying to focus on what I know and apply it in the moment.”
Students and faculty all shared that the competition was not about wins or losses, but rather about celebrating the power of knowledge and student collaboration. CCIU Special Events Coordinator Jay Della Ragione said, “Each year they show remarkable growth, critical thinking, and a genuine passion for learning that truly sets our county’s students apart.”
