Charming 1920s Kennett Square Home Transformed into a Cottage Garden Oasis

Explore how a renovated 1920s home in Kennett Square became a lush cottage garden retreat with outdoor rooms and glowing nighttime charm.

A renovated 1920s Kennett Square home has become a beautiful cottage garden, writes Eileen Smith Dallabrida for Main Line Today.

The buyer had recently made some updates to the charming home, including French doors that led to the yard. That’s where she saw her vision come to life.

“She wanted to create her own oasis—a place for her and her favorite things,” said Danilo Maffei, a landscape architect at Maffei Landscape Design in Kennett Square. “The closer you are to the house, the more formal and structured it is. As you move away, it’s more relaxed.”

The French doors lead onto a formal patio, perfect for dinner and cocktails. There, you’ll find annual blooms, such as cannas and palms. The garden extends beyond the patio, separating itself into “outdoor rooms.”

Repurpose stones act as a path, leading to a quaint seating area for two that is sheltered around tufts of greenery. The garden doesn’t close at night. In fact, it may become even more magical. Maffei sourced wire-framed orbs, which hang from a crabapple tree.

Maffei revealed through a Facebook post that this project was created for a beloved neighbor and friend, Becky, who was able to enjoy its beauty before she passed away from brain cancer in 2022.
