From her early days in senior living to her current role as Surgical Optimization Coordinator at Nemours Children’s Health, Lydia Kirby has built a career rooted in compassion, efficiency, and service.
Born in Delaware and raised in Kennett Square, Kirby’s journey into healthcare began at just 15, serving residents at Kendal Crosslands Communities. Her responsibilities grew over time from server to cook, supervisor, CNA, and eventually to an administrative role overseeing skilled nursing operations.
As Surgical Optimization Coordinator at Nemours, Kirby is the operational glue that keeps surgical scheduling running smoothly. She oversees OR block time across multiple sites in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, ensuring families’ needs are met while coordinating closely with surgeons and administrative teams. Her efforts recently earned her a 2024 Associate of the Year nomination — an honor that speaks to the high regard her colleagues hold for her.
“Though I did not receive the award, I was extremely honored and flattered that my colleagues thought so highly of me,” she said. “I take immense pride in my work and will always try to accommodate both patients and providers.”
Kirby graduated from Bishop Shanahan High School in 2015 and earned her bachelor’s in Health Science from Widener University. After initially starting as a Nursing major, she shifted focus to Health Sciences, a decision that ultimately clarified her path in Healthcare Operations. She is now pursuing her master’s in Health Sciences at Wilmington University, continuing to build on her passion for supporting patients and providers behind the scenes.
While Kirby credits her professional growth to many mentors and supporters, she says her biggest inspiration is her five-year-old son, Xavier: “He pushes me to do better — not just for myself, but for him,” said Kirby. “My dream is to give him a life full of memories, adventure, and the belief that anything is possible.”
When she takes a break, Kirby’s go-to spot is Mercato in West Chester.
