2025 VISTA NextGen Superstars: Derek Slifer

Derek Slifer, Rules Instructor/Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers at SEPTA, joins the 2025 VISTA NextGen Superstars.

As a Rules Instructor and Designated Supervisor of Locomotive Engineers at SEPTA, Derek Slifer plays a critical role in training and certifying the engineers and conductors who keep the region moving. His journey to this position began early in life, shaped by hands-on experience, mentorship, and a deep love for the industry.

Born and raised in Malvern, Slifer’s first job was working at his father’s automotive repair business. Even at a young age, sweeping floors and taking out the trash, he was learning invaluable lessons about customer service, mechanical knowledge, and work ethic. These early experiences instilled skills he still applies today.

Slifer attended Great Valley High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from West Chester University. While his formal education was rooted in design, his professional trajectory led him to the railroad industry, where he found his true calling.

At SEPTA, Slifer develops and executes lesson plans for the Locomotive Engineer training program, focusing on Equipment Qualifications and Air Brake Instruction. He trains locomotive engineers and conductors, ensuring they are fully prepared to operate safely and efficiently. He also oversees recertifications for SEPTA’s more than 200 Locomotive Engineers — a fact he takes great pride in.

“It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see a train pull into a station carrying hundreds of passengers, knowing that the crew was trained and promoted by me,” said Slifer.

One of Slifer’s proudest professional accomplishments is his volunteer work with the West Chester Railroad (WCRR), a non-profit tourist railroad. For over 20 years, he has been an active volunteer, eventually becoming Operations Manager. The experience he gained at WCRR has directly contributed to his success at SEPTA, allowing him to refine his skills in railroad operations, logistics, and leadership.

“It’s rewarding work that gives me the freedom to try new things and use every skill I have while helping the community,” he said.

Slifer credits Joe Giacchino and Skip Small, Founders of West Chester Railroad, as two of the most influential people in his career, as they showed him “the nuts and bolts” of running a short-line railroad from the ground up. Their mentorship helped shape his understanding of the industry and paved the way for his leadership roles.

When it comes to life outside of work, Slifer enjoys spending time at home with his wife, Morgan, and their two daughters.

Slifer and the rest of the 2025 Class of VISTA NextGen Superstars will be honored at the Awards Reception & Celebration on Thursday, May 8 at the Penn State Great Valley Conference Center.
