Termini Bros., the 104-year-old bakery and Philadelphia staple, uses eggs as a key ingredient in their many fresh pastries.
Like many, however, the owners are feeling the effects of the rising cost of eggs, writes TaRonda Thomas for 6abc.
According to Vincent Termini Jr., who runs the business with his brother, the bakery received eggs at $3 a pound last month. However, just a month later, that price has skyrocketed to $4.40 per pound.
That increase is sure to be felt, as he noted that they go through roughly 3,000 pounds of eggs per week.
The 6abc Data Team found that in December, a dozen large Grade A eggs cost $4.15, which is a 53 percent increase compared to just six months ago.
While costs remain lower now than the record high of $4.82 in 2023, there has still been a notable increase over the years. A decade ago, a dozen eggs cost about $2.21, whereas 30 or 40 years ago, the cost was about 87 cents.
Termini is quite frank about what effect the increased cost of eggs, coupled with an egg shortage, will have on Termini Bros.
“Prices are going to have to go up,” he said.
However, he hopes it’s only temporary.
