Long before the Eagles clinched their ticket to Super Bowl LIX, the Philadelphia Rugby Football Club already had a trip to South Africa planned.
After the way the previous season ended for the Birds, they didn’t anticipate such a fast turnaround.
However, amid clinching their way to the Super Bowl, the local rugby team wouldn’t let anything stop them from catching the game from Cape Town, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
However, it wasn’t easy due to a dearth of spots in South Africa that were airing the game. The closest was an official watch party in Ghana, but that was nearly 5,000 miles away.
“We were very nervous,” said Hannah Oney. “There was one place I found that aired the game previously and when I looked them up, they were completely closed. We were running out of options.”
Luckily, she eventually found a spot called Casa Woodstock.
While the place normally closes at 10 PM, Oney convinced the owner to reopen in the middle of the night just prior to the Super Bowl for a fee of 250 rand, or about $14 each.
The team watched Super Bowl LIX with excitement as the Eagles finished the job to become 2024 Super Bowl champions.
