Newtown Square Home Moves Out of the 1970s but Keeps Its Charm

Sam and Amanda Kirk brought their Newtown Square home out of the 1970s, but kept its original charm.

Sam and Amanda Kirk found the perfect midcentury modern ranch house in Newtown Square to move to from Jersey City in 2019.

“We wanted to be closer to family and take advantage of these wonderful schools,” said Sam, owner of the Jersey City cafe Sam a.m. “We have always been drawn to modern, clean spaces.”

The home was in a wooded setting with plenty of windows for natural light, but the house itself, built around 1970, needed updating and reorganizing, writes Terri Akman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The 2,600-square-foot home now includes five bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms.

Renovations included a new family room, laundry room, workout space, another full bathroom, two more bedrooms and work on the primary bedroom and bathroom.

The second phase of renovations were finished in the fall, when the kitchen and living room were reorganized with higher ceilings and a 24-foot wall of windows, along with warm cabinet tones, and use of natural light.

“We like having big open spaces, but we also wanted cozy moments so we didn’t feel like we were sitting in a big, empty room,” said Sam.
