Work is currently underway on around $6 million of Westtown Township improvements to Oakbourne Park, writes Bill Rettew for The Daily Local News

Last week, earth movers were busy clearing out the dirt to make room for the upgrades that include an expanded and paved parking lot, a new bathroom facility, a picnic pavilion, playground, three pickleball courts, relocated and improved tennis courts, and an improved basketball court. In addition, more walking paths will be added in some areas.

Construction is expected to be nearly completed by the end of this year. This means that East Side Little Leaguers and the West Chester United Soccer Club will most likely be able to play ball in the spring of 2024.

“The athletic facilities had fallen into disrepair and we needed to keep up with the times,” said Township Manager Jonathan Altshul.

According to Altshul, numerous stakeholders as well as township residents gave their input on the improvements.

“The feedback was loud and clear,” he added. “We had to update our athletic facilities and trail network.”

In addition to receiving grants, the township issued $3.5 million in bonds for the project.
