Fishtown, a small fishing village in the 1700s, has become one of Philadelphia’s buzziest neighborhoods, writes Lyndsey Matthews for The Points Guy.
Over the past two centuries, Fishtown evolved into a working-class hub for the commercial shad-fishing industry, but faced hard times at the end of the last century.
However things started to improve about a decade ago, after the neighborhood welcomed a beer hall, a few yoga studios, and the flagship location of La Colombe.
Since then, Fishtown has become a vibrant hotspot, with popular live music at venues such as The Fillmore and Johnny Brenda’s. There are also award-winning restaurants like Kalaya, and innovative culinary experiences, including the city’s first cheese vending machine, Perrystead Dairy Cheese Vending Machine, and the urban winery, Mural City Cellars.
Even Beyoncé ordered her birthday cake from the neighborhood’s Cake Life Bake Shop.
The recent opening of the chic Hotel Anna & Bel solidified Fishtown’s status as a destination. The hotel boasts an in-house Mediterranean restaurant and vibrant cocktail bar, while also offering guests a serene haven with its heated outdoor pool.
Other must-visit spots in Fishtown include Middle Child Clubhouse, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Fiore, a traditional Italian bakery; and Jinxed Vintage, a lovely vintage and antique store.
