Karl Tradewell, a Paoli resident, is among the growing number of homeowners supplementing their income by renting out their pools through Swimply app, writes Karen Heller for the Washington Post.
Tradewell charges anywhere from $68 an hour for a chance to frolic in 25,000 gallons of clear saltwater contained in an azure kidney-shaped vessel. He started listing his pool last summer on the Airbnb of aquatic recreation. His “Mainline Paoli Pool Party/Vacation for the day” tagline immediately attracted visitors.
“I’m very business-minded,” said Tradewell, who is a biotech recruiter. “They don’t have the enjoyment in their own backyard. Why not share?”
Sometimes he hosts families who just want to enjoy a couple of hours of swimming and sometimes he welcomes larger groups for parties. A birthday party of 25 people netted him $500 one weekend.
He makes his bathroom available to his guests and for an extra $35, includes his grill into the mix. Tradewell’s pool is in high demand. He has booked it 45 times already this summer, and August has not yet started. The arrangement works well for everybody.
“This is a win-win for us,” said Jason Qiu, one of the renters.
