The state of New York selected Doylestown’s Baruch S. Blumberg Institute to manage a life sciences incubator at a planned $430 million cell and gene therapy campus in Long Island called BioGenesis Park, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Blumberg Institute is a nonprofit biotechnology research and education organization. Its primary focus is finding a cure for hepatitis B and liver cancer.
The organization runs the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center of Bucks County in Doylestown and B+labs at the Cira Centre in West Philadelphia, which provide laboratory and office space to almost 70 early-stage biotech companies.
“This really validates the work we’re doing in Pennsylvania and our [Incubator] model specifically,” said Lou Kassa, CEO of the Blumberg Institute and the biotech center.
However, Kassa emphasized that its participation in the New York project does not mean that the organization will abandon its local roots.
“We are still all in on Pennsylvania,” he said. “Our commitment to Pennsylvania is stronger than ever. This enhances what we are doing in Pennsylvania and makes us stronger.”
