Widener University’s Nursing Program Named a Center of Excellence

Widener's nursing clinics offer uninsured residents in Chester and nearby areas access to nurse-managed primary care services, providing valuable hands-on experience for our nursing students while improving healthcare accessibility and affordability in the community.

Widener University’s School of Nursing in Chester was one of 13 institutions named a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing.

The National League recognized the school’s evidence-based and innovative efforts to enhance student learning and professional development.

This is the program’s second Center of Excellence honor in the student learning and professional development category from the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education.

“We are proud to once again be recognized by the NLN as a Center of Excellence,” said Anne Krouse, dean of nursing. “This designation reflects the enormous efforts that our incredible Widener nursing faculty and staff made to achieve academic excellence and develop innovative teaching methods that prepare the next generation of nursing professionals.

“Receiving this designation for a second time underscores how our program continues to be a distinguished leader in nursing education.”

In addition to being named a Center of Excellence for student learning and professional development in 2020 and 2024, Widener’s nursing program earned a designation for its work to advance the science of nursing education in 2013, 2018, and 2023.

Widener nursing is just one of seven schools nationwide to hold that designation, which runs through 2027. To date, only 95 institutions hold the Center of Excellence in Nursing Education designation.

Nursing remains a powerhouse program at Widener. Earlier this year, the program unveiled expansions to its state-of-the-art simulation lab that included a new lab outfitted with virtual reality and haptics technology, which allows the user to interact with virtual objects and receive feedback in the virtual environment.

Additionally, student demand is strong with the incoming first-year nursing classes at capacity for two consecutive years.

Widener University is a private institution known for its commitment to the personal and professional success of every student, where academic experiences are distinguished by excellence and students develop the leadership qualities employers seek.

Core values of respect, integrity and excellence are reflected in an outstanding student experience provided through an agile, innovative and inclusive approach to learning.

Industry-shaping faculty provide close, personal mentorship and share powerful connections that help students build professional networks.

Recognized as one of the Philadelphia region’s leading universities, Widener offers programs and experiences that empower our community of learners to discover and create better futures as scholars, leaders and globally engaged citizens.
