Michael’s Way Helps Families Affected by Cancer Pay Their Bills

Chris McElwee started the nonprofit Michael's Way in honor of his brother who passed away from leukimia.

When Chris McElwee lost his brother Michael to leukemia, he decided to open a nonprofit organization in his name, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6ABC.

“We came up with the idea Michael’s Way because he was always helping others,” McElwee said of his brother, who was 25 at the time of his passing.

McElwee and his family thought that was a void in helping parents who have a child with cancer. The nonprofit works to help families affected by cancer by paying their nonmedical expenses.

“That helps them focus on what’s most important, and that’s getting their child well,” said McElwee.

When families are burdened with the toll cancer takes on a family, they can easily start to fall behind on their bills. That’s when Michael’s Way steps in.

They hosted their main fundraiser at Stonewall Golf Course in Elverson, where they raised over $500,000.

One of the golfers at the fundraiser was Matthew Hohn. Michael’s Way assisted Hohn and his family twenty-two years ago when Hohn had cancer.

Today, he is still in remission.
