Family-owned trucking company A. Duie Pyle, based in West Goshen, celebrated its 100th anniversary this spring, writes Joseph N. DiStefano for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The business has survived and continued to thrive by bucking trends over the years. The latest shift in the industry was the new emphasis on rapid delivery caused primarily by Amazon Prime. Prior to that, the company managed to successfully adapt to deregulation and supply chain changes, among other issues.
The firm was founded by A. Duie Pyle, the grandfather of its current chairman, Peter A. Latta.
“My grandfather started this business with a six-year-old truck he bought from a neighbor,” said Latta. “On April 1, we turned 100 years old. Not many businesses make it to the third generation or the fourth.”
With its regional hauling partners across the U.S. and Canada, the 4,000-worker trucking company offers overnight LTL (less than truckload) hauling from New England through Virginia, and west to Ohio. Its other services include supply-chain planning, contract services, and new warehouses and other facilities that have been specifically designed to cope with the speedup in deliveries.
A. Duie Pyle topped $700 million in sales last year.
