Wall Street Journal: With ‘Dramatic’ Rise in Price of Diesel, Truckers Like West Chester’s A. Duie Pyle Feel the Pinch
Trucking companies like West Chester-based A. Duie Pyle are getting hit hard by the recent rise in the price of diesel fuel, writes Lydia O’Neal for The Wall Street Journal.
Diesel prices shot up $1.10 a gallon in just two weeks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Luckily, A. Duie Pyle had filled up a 500,000-gallon storage tank right before the invasion.
“Nobody contemplated back then we could see diesel costs in excess of $5 a gallon,” said Peter Latta, chairman of A. Duie Pyle.
Like many other companies, Pyle must now adjust its fuel surcharge mechanism to account for diesel prices that seemed unfathomable years ago.
Additional adjustments may include favoring shorter runs over long-haul trips, less idling, and cutting speed.
“The velocity of the increase has really been dramatic,” said Latta, adding that customers “have been very understanding.”
