Tyler Smiley, who is from Chester County but now lives in Delaware, is a finalist in the Bird Photographer of the Year contest for his pictures, writes Karin Mallet for WFMZ 69 News.

It was Smiley’s first time entering in the contest, but he’s loved taking photos and got into nature photography in 2017. There were over 24,000 submissions for the competition and he finds out if he wins in September.
Living at Rehoboth Beach makes it easy for him to go out and catch glimpses of little birds sanderlings, but getting a good photo of them is the hard part.
According to Smiley, “you have to remember that birds are living things and won’t always cooperate with you, so you might have to find the bird quite a few times to get the shot you imagined.”
Yet two of his pictures made it to the final round, so his hard work seems to have paid off. They were taken on the beach and at a nearby state park where he found an interesting array of bird species thanks to the biodiversity of Delaware beaches.
