Ryan attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, where he was a starting quarterback for three years. During his time in high school, he received many accolades for his impressive football career.

He played football at Boston College and was the third overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.

“April 26, 2008, my lifelong dream came true,” Ryan said in his emotional Instagram tribute. “Ever since I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was play professional sports. And on that Saturday in New York City, the Atlanta Falcons gave me that chance.” He also noted the impact his teammates and coach had on him during his professional career.

Ryan, 38, spent 14 of his 15 seasons as a Falcon, where he earned four Pro Bowl nods and the 2016 NFL MVP award. As he hangs up his jersey, he leaves the world of football as the seventh all-time in passing yards and the ninth in touchdowns.
