In the heart of Coatesville, a community is experiencing a remarkable transformation thanks to the unwavering efforts of Habitat for Humanity of Chester County. At the center of this transformation lies Cambria Homes, a project that epitomizes the organization’s commitment to creating lasting change through collaboration and innovation.

2001 marked the beginning of the Cambria Homes project, which entails revitalizing a once-dilapidated area into a vibrant community of homes. In total, there are 86 mixed-income homes in Coatesville (Cambria Terrace) and South Coatesville (Cambria Heights) that comprise the development. Originally consisting of public housing that had fallen into disrepair, the neighborhood now stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives.

The effort, begun by the Housing Authority of Chester County and completed by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County, has been years in the making. As homes are being finalized, anticipation builds for a grand dedication back to the city of Coatesville. This dedication signifies more than just completing construction; it symbolizes restoring hope and opportunity to the area’s residents.

“If you look at what the Oak Street Projects were and what Cambria is now, it has completely changed the landscape of that area and engaged the community in the affordable housing process,” said Christy Kane, Director of Development and Marketing at Habitat for Humanity of Chester County.

The impact of the neighborhood extends far beyond providing shelter; it is about building generational wealth and changing the trajectory of lives for the families who call it home.

The project’s success is attributed to strategic partnerships with local government, corporations, churches, and foundations that have generously supported the effort. The County of Chester, in particular, was instrumental in helping Habitat to secure the property and providing further funding for the infrastructure improvements. These partnerships have enabled Habitat for Humanity to utilize affordable materials and engage volunteers through team builds, ensuring that the homes remain affordable and energy-efficient.

“We have really good relationships with different vendors, and we’re always looking for companies and organizations to partner with to help us bring affordable housing to communities in Chester County,” said Kane. “And affordability extends beyond materials used to build. We also ensure the materials are energy efficient because we want to build quality and cost-efficient homes.”

As the Cambria Homes project nears completion, Habitat for Humanity of Chester County looks toward future endeavors. Kane stated that HFHCC recently purchased two adjoining lots on Foundry Street in Caln Township.

“Our next our next phase in the Coatesville area is located in neighboring Caln, where volunteers will build a many as 40 homes on those multi-acre lots over the next few years,” said Kane.

This commitment to ongoing community development underscores the organization’s dedication to making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

For individuals interested in becoming homeowners through Habitat for Humanity’s programs, an application process is in place. Potential homeowners undergo an education process that covers housing etiquette, budgeting, and homeownership responsibilities.

The Cambria Homes development is a beacon of hope, illustrating what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared vision of creating a better future. Through their tireless efforts and the support of many, Habitat for Humanity of Chester County continues to transform lives and communities, one home at a time.
